The Big Bang’s Playing on TV

Noise, in analog video and television, is a random dot pattern of static displayed when no transmission signal is obtained by the antenna receiver of television set and other display devices. The random pattern superimposed on the picture, visible as a random flicker of “dots” or “snow”, is the result of electronic noise and radiated electromagnetic noise accidentally picked up by the antenna. This effect is most commonly seen with analog TV sets or blank VHS tapes.

There are many sources of electromagnetic noise which cause the characteristic display patterns of static. Atmospheric sources of noise are the most ubiquitous, and include electromagnetic signals prompted by cosmic microwave background radiation,or more localized radio wave noise from nearby electronic devices.

Microwaves are a low-energy form of radiation but higher in energy than radio waves. The cosmic microwave background blankets the universe and is responsible for a sizeable amount of static on your television set—well, before the days of cable. Turn your television to an “in between” channel, and part of the static you’ll see is the afterglow of the big bang.

Two bits of fabric stitched
Slowly, gently at first
Passion ignites
And it becomes fervent
For awhile, still soft but intricate
Forming a tidy, delicate pattern
Secure and lovely to behold
But something goes awry
And the stitching shifts
To wild, reckless passes
Sloppy but tightly intertwined
Forming a bond difficult to break
But increasingly ugly
Finally covering the beauty
Until it’s unrecognizable
And impossible to recover
Even with skilled hands

It goes on and on
Until one stops and says, “Enough,”
Screeches to a halt
Shakily, pulling out a knife
Clenched, drawing it over the seam
And, as quickly as it can
Reaches into every crevice
To cut
Until every tie is severed
And each piece of fabric lies, wounded
From the holes where thread used to pass
And cuts from misjudged slices
So used and torn
They wait to be renewed
United with new lovers
If the day ever comes
Hoping to bury their scars
Beneath folds made at the edges
Obscured by new, improved seams
So that the flaws are only revealed
When you turn them inside-out.

A portion of the Keyhole (the dark mass on the bottom), and on the top left, one of many dense molecular clouds of gas and dust being simultaneously compressed by the hot gases surrounding them, and ionized by the intense ultraviolet radiation from nearby stars. Within a few million years, most of the gases in the molecular cloud will be scattered and mixed with its surroundings. But stars now forming in its interior will gleam brightly, once their dusty shroud is removed.
